This week, following our meeting with Dr. Ejaz, work was fairly light though important. Due to the inductive load of the DC fans, there is a voltage spike present at the load that had to be dealt with via the inclusion of a suitable Flyback diode. For this purpose, a common diode for this purpose was chosen, the 1N4001 diode was selected. The forward voltage is 1.1V, maximum blocking voltage of 50V, and with a forward current of up to 1A, this will more than meet the requirements for our 12V 160mA circuit. To confirm, the circuit was simulated in Multi-Sim with and without the diode present which shows the elimination of the negative voltage spike.
To this end, a pack of these diodes were ordered for soldering.
