The group had mostly individual work to perform this week with printing of the nozzles and addition of monitoring code needing to be added by Ian and integration of the nozzles as well as baseline testing needing to be done by Daniel.
For this week the group discussed their individual progress and verified that the IR issue was being caused by exposure to ambient IR from sunlight. Despite the filter on the packaging of the photodiode, the IR portion of the sunlight is always sufficient to cause it to saturate.
Dr. Radu Bunea, a professor at Valencia College, suggested that ultra-sonic sensors be used in place of IR sensors as they would effectively perform the same task but use a different method of detection that is not reliant on light. They are also far cheaper than quality optical filters. This would be tested later in the week along with a last IR solution in the form of an encased emitter and photodiode.
